Driving Center of America FAQ's

Are all the driving schools listed on your website fully-accredited by the New York DMV to offer behind-the-wheel training courses in New York?
The driving school directory on our website is for your convenience only, and we cannot absolutely guarantee that every driving school listed is currently licensed to offer driving training courses in New York.  We suggest you contact the New York DMV to make sure a particular driving school is licensed before you sign up to take their driving course.
Could I just have my mother or father give me my behind-the-wheel training instead of paying money to attend a professional behind-the-wheel training course?
It depends on which state you live in.  There are some states which permit you to do your behind-the-wheel training with a parent or guardian instead of enrolling in a professional driving school.  However many states require that first-time drivers take a professionally-taught driver training course.  We recommend that you check with your state's DMV office to find out if your parent or guardian can fill the role as your behind-the-wheel driving instructor.
What happens if I don't know how to operate a manual-shift vehicle? Will Driving Center of America allow me to do my driver training with an automatic-shift vehicle?
Considering you're a brand new driver, you probably don't know much about operating any type of automobile--stick-shift or automatic-shift!  However, if you prefer to complete your behind-the-wheel training using an automatic-shift vehicle, you should contact Driving Center of America and let them know before you register for their behind-the-wheel training course.  That way you will know for certain if they will accommodate you.
I live in a small rural town, where there are a lot of small, unpaved roads. Will my behind-the-wheel training with Driving Center of America include learning how to drive in rural areas? Or do they just offer training for urban driving?
Most local driving schools will likely want their students to be taught how to drive safely in the local area.  Therefore, chances are good that the behind-the-wheel training you receive from Driving Center of America will include handling dirt roads and mountain driving.
I just turned 14 years old. Can I receive my instruction permit in New York?
Probably not.  The minimum age requirement for holding an instruction permit in most states is 15 1/2.  You should contact the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or a licensed driver training institute such as Driving Center of America to find out more information about the minimum age requirement in New York.
Can I take Driving Center of America's driver training course before taking a Tappan New York drivers education classroom course or online course?
It depends on what New York's laws say.  However, you should know that most states will require teen-aged, first-time drivers to complete both a drivers education classroom course (which are approximately 30 hours in length, depending on New York's laws) or an approved online course, plus a state-approved behind-the-wheel training course.  We recommend that you contact Driving Center of America directly to see if they offer either (or both) of these courses.
