Mathews Driving School FAQ's

Can you tell me if Mathews Driving School is a certified driver training school in California?
Although Mathews Driving School is listed on our list of driving schools in your area, we are unable to say with certainty as to whether they are currently licensed to teach behind-the-wheel training courses in California.  We recommend either calling Mathews Driving School directly or the California DMV to find out whether or not Mathews Driving School offers behind-the-wheel training courses that are state-approved.
Is it true that my mom or dad can be my driving instructor when I do my behind-the-wheel training instead of a professional driving school instructor like the ones they have at Mathews Driving School?
It depends on what your state's laws are.  You should contact the California DMV or a licensed driving school like Mathews Driving School to find out if California allows behind-the-wheel training with a parent.
Do you know if Mathews Driving School will let me complete my behind-the-wheel training using an automatic-shift vehicle? I don't know anything about using a manual-shift.
Considering you're a brand new driver, you probably don't know a whole lot about driving ANY type of vehicle, be it a stick OR an automatic!  Nevertheless, if you have a preference, you probably should contact Mathews Driving School and see if they can accommodate you before registering for their driver training course.
Since I live way out in a remote location where driving on unpaved roads and bumpy terrain is the norm, will Mathews Driving School be able to teach me how to drive in a rural environment? Or do they only prepare you for city-driving?
Since you live in a rural area, odds are that any local driving school in your area such as Mathews Driving School will want you to be able to drive safely on unpaved roads and bumpy terrain.  We recommend that you contact Mathews Driving School directly to find out exactly what they offer.
Can 14-year-olds obtain learner's permits to drive in California?
Most states have set the minimum age for applying for a learner's permit at 15 or 15 1/2.  However, some states do allow 14-year-olds to get a learner's permit.  You may want to contact the California DMV or a California-approved driver training school like Mathews Driving School to find out what the minimum age to drive is in California.
Do I have to complete a San Jose California drivers education classroom course or online course before signing up to take one of Mathews Driving School's behind-the-wheel training courses?
Each state has its own laws, but most states will require first-time drivers to take both a behind-the-wheel training course plus either a defensive driving classroom course (which are about 30 hours in length) or an approved online drivers education course.  You may want to ask Mathews Driving School if they offer one or both programs.

Is it necessary for me to complete a driver training course in order to get my first California driver's license?
Yes, it is.  All teen-aged drivers applying for their first driver's license in California must complete a state-approved behind-the-wheel training course.
