How old do I have to be to take my permit test?

To take the test for your Pennsylvania learner's permit, you must be at least 16 years old.

 


How old do I have to be to get my driver’s license?

You can get your restricted Pennsylvania junior driver's license at age 16.

You can get your full, unrestricted Pennsylvania license as early as 17 ½ if you must have held a junior driver's license for at least one year, had no accidents or driving convictions, and completed driver's education.


What paperwork do I need before I can learn to drive a car?

To apply for your Pennsylvania learner's permit, you need to complete application form DL-180 (or DL-180TD if under age 18). After getting a physical examination, your healthcare provider must complete the medical certification section of the application.

 

You will also need to show proof of identity, two proofs of residency (if you are 18 years of age or older), your Social Security card, and fee.


What if I don’t pass the test? How many times can I take the test?

Most states require you to wait a day before retaking the test.


How many questions are on the final exam at the end of this course?

This varies from state to state.

You do not need to go to a professional driving school. To get a Pennsylvania driver's license, you only need 50 hours of driving accumulated over 6 months.


How many hours of supervised driving do I have to have before I can get my driver’s license?

To get a Pennsylvania driver's license, you need 50 hours of driving accumulated over 6 months. An experienced, licensed driver aged 21 or older must accompany you at all times. A parent or guardian must certify (Parent or Guardian Certification Form (DL-180C)) that your six months of skill building included at least 50 hours of practical, adult-supervised driving experience.


Can my friends ride with me after I get my permit or license?

All drivers under 18, regardless of the type of license they hold, must ensure the number of passengers in their vehicle does not exceed the number of seat belts.


Can I drive alone with my learners permit or restricted license?

If you hold a Pennsylvania learner's permit, you can only drive while accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old.

If you hold a Pennsylvania restricted license, you may not drive between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., unless you are driving for employment or volunteer service (you must carry written documentation of work or volunteer service).
