Colorado Driver License Requirements at-a-glance:

  • Minimum Age for Driver Education Instruction Permit 15 years. This type of instruction permit is available mainly for minors who are between the ages of 15 and 15½ so they can begin their behind-the-wheel training. To be eligible, you must have successfully completed the classroom portion of the required driver education within the past six (6) months.
  • Minimum Age for Driver Awareness Instruction Permit 15 years, 6 months. This type of instruction permit is available mainly for minors who are between the ages of 15½ and 16 who have not held a driver education permit.
  • Minimum Age for Minor Instruction Permit 16 years. This type of instruction permit is available for minors who have reached the age of 16 and who have not held either a driver education permit or a driver awareness permit.
  • Instruction Permit Holding Period Drivers under the age of 18 must hold their instruction permit for at least twelve (12) months.
  • Unsupervised Driving Rules Instruction permit holders may NOT drive alone. You must have either the person who signed your Affidavit of Liability (Form DR2460) or a licensed Colorado driver who's at least 21 seated next to you in the front passenger seat whenever you drive. Please be aware that only driving time with the signer of your Form DR2460 or a driver education instructor can be counted towards your 50 hours of supervised driving practice time.
  • Minimum Amount of Supervised Driving 50 hours of driving practice with the person who signed your Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship (Form DR2460).
  • Minimum Age for Minor Driver License 16 years. The applicant must have held his/her instruction permit for at least twelve months, completed and logged 50 hours of driving practice time, and, if under 16½, must have completed additional behind-the-wheel training with an approved driver education instructor. If there is no driving school within 30 miles of your residence, you may complete an additional 12 hours with the person who signed your Form DR2460.
  • Passenger Rules First Six (6) Months After Receiving a Minor License: No passengers under the age of 21 are allowed to be in the vehicle (except immediate family). Second Six (6) Months: May carry only one (1) passenger under the age of 21 who's not an immediate family member. Seat belts must be worn by ALL occupants of the vehicle.
